Why Australian?

What makes the “Australian Labradoodle” so special anyway? Most people we come in contact with believe that a Labradoodle is a Labradoodle is a Labradoodle. The common thought is that a Labradoodle is a simple cross between a Labrador and a Standard Poodle. Some will learn as much that there are F1’s and F1B’s and multigenerational Labradoodles. This is indeed a fact. HOWEVER, this is what would be called an American Labradoodle. This is NOT the same breed as an Australian Labradoodle or Australian Service Dog. Please read on for the whole scoop!!!
In the late 1980’s Rutland Manor (owned by Beverley Manners who co-founded this breed) and Tegan Park Labradoodles, both located in Melbourne, Australia, worked together to create this incredible breed. In addition to the original crosses between a Standard Poodle and a Labrador, they began carefully infusing several other breeds into early generations of their Lab/Poodle crosses, to improve temperament, coat, conformation, and size. The infused breeds include four different breeds, the Irish Water Spaniel, American Cocker Spaniel, the English Cocker Spaniel, and the Irish Soft Coated Wheaten. The resulting Labradoodles subsequently have been bred to each other, continuing the multi-generational tradition.

Today, Australian Labradoodles are wonderful, intelligent dogs with lush coats that are more reliably low to non-shedding and allergy friendly than other types of Labradoodles such as first generation Lab/Poodle crosses, or first generation crosses bred back to Poodles. Even when the other types of Labradoodles are bred on for generations, the result is not an Australian Labradoodle, as the attributes of the infused breeds were not included in their ancestry.

It is extremely important that breeder integrity is maintained and that the gene pool of the Australian Labradoodle remains as it was founded to be. That is why we at Sequoia Haven will always be selective in our breeding choices. We will always be in alignment with what the founders desired and obtained. It has taken many years of research and study in order to come to the conclusion that this breed shines above the standard American Labradoodle. Our mission is to never deviate from this perfection. You, as a potential consumer, can rest assured knowing that our dedication to this cause runs deep. You can trust that the dogs we produce will be nothing less than what the original founder created.

Happy doodling!
